The important part is what follows. An Arya Samaj certificate on its own is evidence that a ceremony took place; it is not a substitute for registration. We register the marriage with the court afterwards so that you hold a certificate that banks, passport offices and consulates will accept without argument.

If one partner belongs to a different religion, they may undergo a Shuddhi (conversion) ceremony, or you can instead marry under the Special Marriage Act, 1954, which allows inter-religion marriage without conversion.
